Gene Noses out Tony in Shooting His Age

If you’ve followed the latest news on this page, you’ll know that on July 8 Tony Melin, at the age of 87, shot his age with a sparkling 85. As it happens, that same feat had just been accomplished earlier that day, about the time Tony was finishing up his front nine. Gene Haman, at 85, and another longstanding BMC member, had just shot an 85 himself. So, even though word came in afterwards, Gene was actually the first BMC member in 2021 to accomplish this rare golfing exploit. When asked about his round, Gene observed, in his familiar understated style, that it turned out “pretty well.” Expanding a bit, he acknowledged that the highlight came, of all places, on number 16—for many, the most daunting hole on the course. Using his trusty three metal, Gene had launched his tee shot down the middle, leaving
the green within range. And not being the sort of guy who heads to the course just to lay up, Gene decided to go for it. Pulling his 5-hybrid, he struck his approach well, the ball eventually rolling just over the putting surface to the greenside slope behind the hole. Putting from there, Gene’s downhill eagle bid came to rest just inches short of the cup for a tap-in birdie. Congrats to Gene on this remarkable feat and, with Tony, bringing membership in the BMC’s 2021 Shoot-Your-Age Club to two. Anyone care to make it three?
